Now the fun part! No, I did not bump my head. I said working
out is fun! This is the first step you must take when beginning to exercise.
You have to change your mind-set about what it is that you are about to do.
Working out, exercising, getting fit, whatever you call it, you must understand
that it is just as necessary as drinking enough water and getting enough rest.
Working out is about to become part of your regular routine. Being fit and
healthy is not seasonal; it is permanent. And sweating is part of the proof!
Step #1: Get enough
sleep the night before. Getting enough rest always improves the quality of
your exercise. Tired bodies make for lazy movements and this is where accidents
can even occur. Give yourself a fighting chance and get some sleep!
Step #2: Drink water
before your workout. Hydration is very essential when exercising and often
time we drink water only out of thirst. This is a No-No. When you are thirsty,
that means you are already probably dehydrated or close to it. It you’re not
big on water (I know some people who do not like the taste of water… umm OK),
try adding those flavored drink pouches. Even if you need to nibble on a granola
bar or a small cup of yogurt, that is fine too. I personally cannot go to the
gym hungry. I eat something light to satisfy my stomach.
Step #3: Dressed appropriately. Whatever your fitness activity requires, make sure you have on the right gear. If you are going dancing, you may want a light, comfortable shoe that allows for movement. If you a going for a walk or jog, maybe you need shoes with good support. Do you need a light jacket? If it is cool, can you dress in layers and peel off clothes if necessary? Make sure you have a place for your keys or phone. Supportive undergarments are also a must! If you are doing a circuit with a lot of jumping, make sure you have a supportive bra. Inappropriate attire can make for an uncomfortable workout.
Step #4: Have fun and break a sweat! Start off slow if you need to, or warm up your body for 5 to 10 minutes. Most group classes will have a warm-up time set aside. Commit and stay focused on finishing the workout. Remember to stay hydrated during the activity, dehydration is uncomfortable and not pretty. If you are by yourself, listen to some music to get through the workout. There are millions of workout playlists, or you can make your own. Lastly, remember to have fun and enjoy it. This will become routine for you, not temporary. The more you sweat, the sweeter the reward!
